Kevan chose the Nechako white sturgeon as the theme for his 6th birthday party this spring (2008) and instead of receiving birthday presents he asked each invited guest to make a donation to the Initiative. TWG Chair Cory Williamson was on hand to talk about sturgeon and answer questions. A fabulous sturgeon poster was also created!

Grade 7 and 8 students concerned with the environment at St. Pius X School in Regina, SK recently formed an ecology club. They have held movie nights, draws and dances to raise money for various environmental causes. After hearing about the plight of the Nechako white sturgeon, the club donated $100 to the NWSRI to help save the white sturgeon.

In May 2008, the NWSRI received a letter from Gail Hiebert, a teacher at David Hoy Elementary in Fort St. James...
"At David Hoy Elem (Ft. St. James), we were so thrilled with being part of the (release) project, that we decided to create a fence mural of wooden sturgeon. This will look like the fence murals of salmon that the Stream of Dreams people in the Lower Mainland have been doing with schools there. In fact their fences look so fantastic, that we decided to copy them, but with sturgeon.
We bought 10 4x8 sheets of crezon sign board, and the Ft. St. James High School shop teacher, John Parker cut the blanks to 18x4 and 18x5 pieces. I've stenciled on one of two silouhettes of sturgeon on each piece. He is having his woodworking students cut them out for us. In June, we will calk all the edges, and then every member (students and staff) of David Hoy will paint their fish with bright oil paints. The students who released a sturgeon will be able to also paint their name on their fish. We will wire them to the fence, and create our own Sturgeon Fence Mural to commemorate the Sturgeon Release last fall. I'm hoping that some village officals and perhaps some of your people will be able to come and paint some too. Hopefully the fish will not only beautify David Hoy, but will give your project some great advertisement. Again, thanks for a fantastic day, last Oct 11."
And on June 13th, Justus Benckhuysen, Christina Ciesielski and Carla Wainwright from the NWSRI, joined students from David Hoy Elementary to paint wooden sturgeon. David Hoy and Fort St. James High School students and staff should be extremely proud of the very first wooden sturgeon mural anywhere!
